How much does it cost to build sites like Twitter, Facebook, etc?

Occasionally we meet a new client who believes that they have an idea which will catapult them into the stratospheric levels of the Whatsapp or Angry Birds billionaires.   Sadly they usually have far more enthusiasm than cash and their ideas are often a copy or combination of existing applications.   When we start to work out some rough development costs they are usually astounded.  Quite a few were also hoping to get 100% grant funding for their idea.  Ahem. Now we don’t like bursting anyone’s bubble but sometimes we have to let them down gently. For others it may be better to start off smaller or look for a soft loan or investment. But either way we help them to investigate their idea further to decide if it is viable.

So when we spotted an article by TheNextWeb.com called ‘How much does it cost to build the world’s hottest start ups?’   we were intrigued.   These guys have spoken to a variety of experts to put together some idea of the costs of developing 10 of the World’s hottest start ups, namely Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Uber, Pinterest, Shopify, Angry Birds, Tumblr and Vine.    Really interesting!
